The Inside Scoop: Keyword Prominence & Proximity, Partie Deux

July 14th, 2009

The Inside Scoop, Partie Un, continued…

Now that you’ve earned your diploma in keyword density and frequency, brace yourself for what will distinguish you from the rest of the competition.

Here are two more strategies to factor into other SEO techniques:

  1. Keyword Prominence:
How close to the beginning of a sentence, h tag, meta description or beginning of a web page your keyword is placed points to keyword prominence. This may look like dejavu, but get used to working towards placing the most important keywords at the very beginning of:

-          Your title

-          Your description

-          Your H1 tag, and

-          The content of the page.

  1. Keyword Proximity:
Believe it or not, how close two or more keywords together is measured and this is called, proximity. The closer they are, the higher the ranking.
For example, if you want to rank your website for the keyword phrase, canned French foie gras, then your text should be written something like this: “Remy’s European Market carries the finest of canned French foie gras. Look us up for the most eclectic collection of gastronomical delights!”
Since your keywords are right next to each other, your site receives more value.

Takeaway:

Using keywords are beyond just the normal h tag, meta-tag routine. Making your business online is no cakewalk and unless you have a competitive edge, you wont thrive. Increase your search engine rankings with these four strategies- keyword density, frequency, proximity, and prominence.

The Inside Scoop: Keyword Density & Frequency, Partie Un

July 14th, 2009

As we’ve stressed over and over again in our previous blogs, there are significant strategies involved in search engine optimization. Today, we will talk about two of four particular strategies that can make a considerable different in helping your keywords show up in search. Keyword density, frequency, prominence and proximity are the four primary subjects.

  1. Keyword Density:
The percentage of keywords that can be found in the content of one your pages that is also indexable text refers to “keyword density. The percentage is debatable but conservatively a density of between two to four percent is conservative, while exceeding ten percent is definitely not and highly recommended against. For good keyword density use them in

-          the title

-          the description

-          the H tags

-          the content, but evenly and naturally distributed without coming off as too “spammy.”

  1. Keyword Frequency:

Keyword frequency is as exactly how it sounds. It refers to the number of times a keyword is used on a website. You would think that the more times a keyword or keyword phrase is found on a website, the better the ranking. Wrong. Don’t abuse the system or search engines will penalize you and mark you off as spam. Again, use the same strategy as for good keyword density listed above.
Stay tuned for the second half of “The Inside Scoop.” Partie Deux coming soon.

Small Businesses: Using Organic SEO, Part I

July 9th, 2009

Small businesses typically have small budgets in terms of investing in internet marketing; therefore; it is critical to utilize organic SEO to help a website rank well on search engines.

Although organic SEO is a slow, but steady process, it requires planning ahead and it is done best before a site is even made. Web design is important, but getting caught up focusing on graphics and fancy visual production could be the wrong strategy, especially for search engine optimization.

The number of products or services a small business offers and the number of targeted keywords should determine how many pages should be optimized. Key phrases or keywords should be included in the page title, taglines, headings and content. Since search engines work best with text, ensure that each page has quality and relevant content with appropriate headings.

Another important aspect of good SEO is building links which will help to achieve good rankings. Note that these links should represent relevant websites as well. How competitive the market is for the keywords you are targeting should determine the amount of links that should be acquired. It is an ongoing process and the amount of reciprocal links available should not exceed a quarter of the number of incoming links to the website.
